Money and Racial Differences
The struggle with money is a recurring theme in the novel The Illegal written by Lawrence Hill. Different characters have different struggles, some greater than others. Every character is just trying to do what is best for them and their survival. It is upsetting watching the characters go through these struggles, seeing as they do not deserve it. Unfortunately, it seems these problems also depend on race. Keita, Darlene, and Yvette have some of the most significant money struggles, while the white characters are wealthy, but still search for more. Darlene and Yvette are involved in prostitution, essentially. This is their way of making money. Both girls had a rough childhood, especially Yvette. Yvette grew up in AfricTown, but was unfortunately sent to Zantoroland and executed after having seen the Prime Minister at the Bombay Booty.
